USE OF INTERNET...............

Today, people  use the Internet for a plethora of reasons;
shopping, chatting,
learning, earning,
job hunting,
marketing, and
even socializing                       Ever since the IT boom of the 1990s, the
Internet has been revered as a source
of information beyond geographical
boundaries. With the dot-com bubble in the
late 90s and more recently with the social
networking phenomenon, we’re beginning to
tap into more and more of the potential of the
Web medium.
Today, people use the Internet for a plethora
of reasons; shopping, chatting, learning, earning,
job hunting, marketing, and even socializing.
However, the most fascinating fact is that most
people do all of this from a single platform.
When Classmates.com and later Friendster
fi rst surfaced, they were limited to the student
fraternity, that too from select schools. A
decade later, it is not just limited to socializing,
but has also emerged as a strong career and
business propagation option as well. A report
from Experian reveals that the medium has fast
grown into an integral part of online business.
Forecasts estimate that $4.3 billion will be spent
advertising through social networks in 2011, a
29% increase from this year.
A look at the users of social networking
websites reveals that India is the seventh largest
market for these websites, behind only the US,
China, Germany, Russia, Brazil and the UK. The
Experian fi nding further states that the average
session time for a user visiting Facebook is 21
minutes and 39 seconds. A survey by TNS Global
of 50,000 Internet users spanning across 46
countries shows that the developing countries
contribute the most to the social networking
phenomenon.
